ATM Safety Tips

Below are a couple of ATM safety tips you should remember if you plan to visit an ATM while abroad.

• Use terminals located in banks or populated shopping malls rather than independent terminals. • Try to use terminals where a security guard is present.

• Be aware of your surroundings. Look around before conducting a transaction. If you see anyone or anything suspicious, cancel your transaction and go to another ATM.

• If you must use an ATM after hours, make sure it’s in a well lit area with a lot of foot traffic.

• Never walk away from an ATM with cash still in hand. If you are going to count your money, do so at the ATM.

• When making an ATM transaction from your car, be aware of your surroundings. Keep your eyes and ears open, and keep car doors locked.

• If possible, avoid going to the ATM alone. Instead try to go when you are with someone else or a group of friends.

• Make sure to have your card out before walking up to machine. Waiting until you get to the machine causes you to become distracted looking for the card rather than looking around for criminals. • Use your body to block others near you from seeing your personal identification number (PIN).

• Don’t forget to retrieve your ATM card from the machine after you are finished with your transaction.

• In the event that your card is lost or stolen, be sure to contact your bank as soon as possible to report the incident.
