Auto Safety Kits
Auto safety kits, also referred to as a emergency roadside kit, are great items to keep in your car while abroad. Whether you’re a traveler visiting temporarily and using a rental car or if you’re an expat living in a foreign country, it’s good to be prepared.
Try to recall the last time you were driving and had a flat tire, engine trouble, or other vehicle problems. Remember how frustrated you were and how hard it was to find help? Now think if this would have happened to you overseas. Do you know who to call for help? Is there even help available?
This is something to think about during your travel plans. This is one of the unexpected incidents that could occur and that travelers should prepare for.
So, what items should travelers and expats have in their kits? Below are my suggestions.
- Jumper cables
- Flares
- Flashlight
- Extra batteries
- A temporary quick fix product for flat tires (e.g., Fix-a-Flat foam)
- Bottled water
- Bungie cord
- Car jack
- Extra oil
- Small amount of extra gas
Having a roadside safety kits can make life a whole lot easier in the event that you have vehicle trouble overseas. There are many products on the market where companies prepare these kits for you. However, feel free to purchase the items separately and create your own safety kit.
Expats can purchase these items in country or have them shipped from their home countries. Travelers have a couple of options. They can purchase the items locally from either rental car companies or local stores. Another idea is to prepare a kit in your home country, before departing for your trip, and send it ahead of time to the hotel where you plan staying. This way the kit will be waiting for your use when you arrive at your destination.
