Economic Crisis And Crime Abroad

How can the current economic crisis affect your personal safety during your travels abroad?

The current crisis is global. It not only affects the United States; it affects many other nations. Some of these countries may be one that you intend to travel to soon.

There is a theory among many security professional that believes crime increases as the economy declines. As people lose their jobs and are unable to find employment elsewhere, many of them may resort to crime to survive. Many countries with high unemployment rates also experience high crime rates.

Furthermore due to declining prices in commodities and oil, many foreign governments who depend on this revenue will see their governmental budgets shrink. This means less money for local police forces, who keep order. With a declining budget for law enforcement, criminals will find it easier to operate. Since the police may be even more understaffed and underpaid than they currently are, foreign police officers will be unable to effectively combat criminal activity.

So, the global economic crisis can make more people result to crime because of high unemployment and can decrease the budgets of law enforcement agencies responsible for keeping order.

Therefore, travelers should be even more aware of their personal security while traveling abroad. As you can see, this crisis not only affects the economy but also crime and your foreign travel plans.
