Fire Safety Tips For Your Home Abroad

What should you know about fire safety if you have a home in a foreign country?

Statistics show that fires injure approximately 30,000 people in the U.S. each year.

Another 4,800 are killed. Sound like a lot?

Well these numbers are significantly higher in most second and third world countries. Most homes in foreign countries lack strict fire codes and regulations found in first world countries.

This is why it’s important to follow these recommendations abroad to prevent fire related injuries and deaths.

Install smoke detectors throughout your house.

It’s best to place them in the kitchen and bedrooms. If your house is multi-leveled you should at a minimum install one on each level.

Once they are installed be sure to test them regularly and replace the batteries twice a year.

Develop a fire escape plan. Think about alternative ways to escape in the event there is a fire in your home. Look at ways to escape from each room.

Designate a rally point outside of your home for family members to gather in the event of a fire. If there is a fire you will know how to locate everyone and ensure they are safe.

Also, make sure to practice your plan with family members. Do this often so that everyone knows what to do.

Make sure you have fire extinguishers located throughout the house, especially in the kitchen.

Ensure that you know how to operate it in case of emergency.
