Physical Security Measures
Physical security measures are used to prevent unauthorized access to your business and employees. This why business owners need security. Below are some of the security measure that are available to businesses.
Walls and Fences – The use of walls and fences act as the most outer perimeters of physical security measures. They are the first line of defense to keep criminals out. The also are a barrier between public areas and restricted areas. Walls can be constructed of wood, metal, or concrete. There are also blast walls which can help reduce the effects of a bomb detonated outside of your business. Different fences include electric fences or barbed wire fences.
Business security gates - These are entry gates that allow, or prevent, access to offices or buildings. The may be constructed of glass or metal.
Cameras – The use of cameras not only helps to record criminal acts but also act as a deterrent to potential criminals. Criminals are more likely to attack businesses without cameras than those with cameras. Make sure to keep recordings up to 30 days so you can review any issues that occurred. Also, I’d suggest color video rather than black and white. Color video makes it easier for the police to identify criminals if located. Lastly, pan and tint cameras are preferred over static cameras; they cover more area around your business.
Lights – Proper lighting deters criminals because they are more likely to be seen and/or arrested by law enforcement if they attempt to burglarize or vandalize your business. It also helps identify criminals on cameras if they are recorded.
Security guard business – The presence of a professional security guard service sends a message to criminals that they should seek more venerable targets. A uniformed guard is well worth the investment. Many businesses skimp on these costs, by hiring the lowest bidder, and try to save money by contracting unprofessional security companies. This is a mistake. An unprofessional guard services is worthless. Criminals will see that the guards do not have a clue and attack your business as if there was no guard service present. I personally seen businesses cut corners and regret it later. A little money spent in the beginning could save your business millions of dollars in the end.
Badging - Be sure to institute a badging system at your facilities. This makes it easy to identify employees from criminals. Employees should be required to wear badges at all times and report any suspicious persons seen inside or around the workplace.
Controlled Access Points – Doors should be sturdy and have substantial locks. This prevents criminals from gaining access into your facilities. Many businesses have instituted systems where a employees must swipe their badges thru a card reader in order to gain access into and inside buildings. This helps to track employee movements throughout your facilities.
Resistant Windows – These are windows that are bulletproof or covered with Mylar film. Mylar is a thin, translucent material placed onto windows to help reduce shattering in the event of a bomb blast or breakage.
After having some of these measures installed or if you already have some of them, get a business security system survey and let a security professional determine if it is adequate.
Remember, physical security measures are necassary to protect any business operating abroad.
