School Safety At International Schools

If you have a child attending classes overseas then school safety is important to you.

However, the amount of security at schools abroad can vary widely.

Some have security guards, cameras, proper lighting, controlled access, and security procedures in place. Others have no security measures in place.

So, you should use caution when choosing an international school for your child.

Here’s a suggestion I have, check with your embassy or consulate to see if they have conducted a security survey on the school.

Many embassies instruct there security personnel to check out the schools if embassy children attend classes there.

If the schools are safe enough for embassy children, then the chances are they are safe for your children too.

Conduct a personal tour of the school and meet with the administration.

Do you see guards, gates, cameras, and fire extinguishers?

Ask if there have been prior security incidents at the school.

Check for the nearest police stations, fire stations, and hospitals.

Is there a school nurse on site?

Talk to other parents in the area.

Where do their children attend school?

Visit the school more than once. Make an unannounced visit.

How hard was it to get pass security without an appointment?

Visit the school at night to see if there vagrants or drug users hanging around.

Why is this important?

Because if these people hang out at the school at night you can be sure they are near-by during the day. Also, drug users may leave used drug paraphernalia on or near the school grounds that can infect your child if accidentally stepped on and picked up.

Lastly, you may consider hiring bodyguard to escort your child to school, depending on the situation in the country that you live in.

I know, it may sound a little dramatic; however, kidnappings are prevalent in many countries. Criminals know that parents will do anything for their children.

Also, children are easy targets. They offer little resistance because the criminal can always overpower them. Children are predictable. They leave for and return from school everyday at the same time. All a kidnapper has to do is wait.

So, give this some thought and you will see that it may not be a bad idea. << From School Safety back to Travel Safety For Kids
