Travel Safety For Seniors
With an increasing number of older travelers venturing abroad, travel safety for seniors is becoming more important.
Many seniors refuse to settle down for after retirement but instead decide to travel the world. I think this is great idea and will probably do the same when I reach this point in my life.
However, senior travelers should realize that they are even more of a target that younger travelers.
So here are a few suggestions I have for senior travelers.
When traveling abroad, do not travel alone. Look for tour groups with 5 or more persons. Many of these tour groups specifically market towards older travelers.
Besides, you will also be able to meet fellow travelers and develop friendships.
Travel packing tips
I make for senior travelers is to be sure to bring along extra prescription medications with you on your trip.
In the event that you lose them or they are stolen in your bag, you will have a backup supply.
Also, make sure you have a written prescription for your medication so that they are not seized by customs officials.
In the event that you need to visit a pharmacy abroad be careful when purchasing drugs locally. Many local drugs are fake or diluted.
For example, here in Ecuador it is said that more than 40% of the drugs are counterfeit.
Make sure you know the locations of hospitals and clinics. You will need these if you have reoccurring health problems.
Seniors should also note that many hospitals overseas expect payment in full after rendering medical assistance. Health insurance is almost never accepted.
Be aware of local weather conditions.
In places like Quito, Ecuador and La Paz, Bolivia (which are the two highest capitals in the world) altitude problems are common.
Breathing is harder because the air is so thin. The altitude also causes digestive problems. Be sure not to over exert yourself by exercising or over planning by placing too many things to do on your itinerary.
