Important Travel Safety Statistics For Travelers

Below is a list of travel safety statistics that I have compiled for your travel security and safety plans.

• The U.S. State Department estimates that there are approximately 6.6 million Americans living abroad

• There are approximately 22,000 Americans living in Ecuador

• American businesses overseas are targeted more than the federal government

• You are more likely to be a victim of a crime rather than terrorism while abroad

• During the month of January, there were more murders committed in Quito, Ecuador than in Chicago, IL

• A stolen U.S. passport can be sold on the black market for anywhere between $5,000 and $25,000 USD

• Stolen passports are often used by criminal to commit identity theft

• Most crimes (robbery, burglary, auto break-ins) are economically driven

• In January 2008 there were more than 700 automobile thefts in Quito, Ecuador

• The most common times for house fires are between 11 PM and 6 AM.

• Over 2,500 Americans are arrested abroad each year for drug or alcohol related charges
